Seedling Trays

Start seeds with a tray that matches how many plants you want to grow and how much root space they will need before transplanting.

Vego Garden seed starting trays support different stages of seedling growth, from high-capacity germination to larger-cell growing and up-potting. Air-pruning openings, compatible watering options, and reusable construction make it easier to build a seed-starting setup around your crops and available space.

Choose your seed tray based on seedling quantity, cell size, and how long plants will remain in the tray before moving to the garden.

Find the Right Seed Starting Tray

The best seed starting tray depends on two things: how many seedlings you want to start and how much room each plant needs before transplanting.

Smaller cells maximize capacity. Larger cells give developing roots more space when seedlings need to stay indoors longer.

76-Cell Seedling Tray

Choose the 76-Cell tray when starting more plants in a limited growing area is the priority.

Its 10" × 20" footprint holds 76 cells, making it useful for high-volume germination of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other crops.

Best for: starting many seedlings efficiently in a standard 1020 footprint.

Standard Seedling Tray

The Standard tray is a versatile option for everyday seed starting.

Each compact 5" × 5" module contains eight cells, providing a practical balance between seedling capacity and root space.

Best for: mixed vegetables, herbs, flowers, and general home-garden seed starting.

Jumbo Seedling Tray

Choose Jumbo when seedlings need more room before transplanting.

Four larger, deeper cells give roots additional growing space while keeping the same compact 5" × 5" tray format.

Best for: larger starts and seedlings that will remain indoors longer.

Giga Seedling Tray

Giga is designed for larger seedlings and up-potting rather than high-density germination.

Its nine extra-large, deep cells give vigorous crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, and melons more space before their final transplant.

Best for: up-potting and extending the indoor growth period of larger seedlings.

Seed Trays Designed for More Than Germination

A seed tray should support the plant beyond the moment a seed sprouts.

Vego seedling trays are designed around root development, watering, transplanting, and repeated seasonal use.

Air-Pruning Cells

Side openings expose developing root tips to air as they reach the edge of the cell.

This air-pruning design helps reduce root circling and supports a denser root structure before transplanting.

Flexible Watering Options

Different seedling stages may need different watering methods.

Compatible Vego trays can be used with drip-watering lids or bottom watering trays, giving gardeners more flexibility as plants move from germination into active growth.

Bottom watering is especially useful once seedlings are established because moisture can move upward through the growing mix without repeatedly watering over tender stems and leaves.

Easier Transplanting

Wide openings at the base of the cells make it easier to push plugs upward when seedlings are ready to move.

This reduces the need to pull plants from the stem and makes the transition from seedling tray to raised bed, planter, greenhouse, or larger container more controlled.

Reusable Construction

Vego seedling trays are made from heavy-duty molded plastic for repeated use.

Clean and dry the trays after transplanting, then store them for the next seed-starting cycle instead of replacing lightweight disposable trays each season.

Build a Seed Starting Setup That Fits Your Garden

You may only need individual seedling trays, or you may want a more complete seed-starting setup.

Vego's modular system lets you combine trays with compatible watering, humidity, and lighting components as needed.

Choose 1010 or 1020 Capacity

A 10" × 10" setup works well for smaller growing areas and fewer seedlings.

A 10" × 20" setup provides more capacity for larger seed-starting projects.

Compatible Vego components are sized to work together, making it easier to organize trays, watering bases, and humidity covers within the same footprint.

Add Bottom Watering

Bottom watering trays provide a shared base for compatible seedling trays.

Use them when you want several smaller trays organized together or prefer established seedlings to take up moisture from below.

Add a Humidity Dome

A humidity dome helps maintain moisture around freshly planted seeds during germination.

Choose a dome that matches the tray footprint, then adjust ventilation and remove the cover as seedlings emerge and begin active growth.

Build a Seed Starter Kit

If you are starting from scratch, a seed starter kit can reduce the need to match individual components.

Vego seed starting bundles combine compatible seedling trays with watering bases and drip-watering lids, creating a coordinated setup for germination and early seedling growth.

If you already own lights, domes, or watering equipment, individual trays may be the more flexible choice.

Add Grow Lights When Needed

Indoor seedlings need sufficient light once they emerge.

If natural daylight is limited, pair the tray setup with a grow light sized for the growing area rather than choosing a fixture only because the tray fits beneath it.

Choosing Seed Starting Trays for Your Plants

Think beyond germination when choosing a tray.

The key question is how large the seedling is likely to become before it moves to its final growing space.

Use this simple guide:

76-Cell

Choose when starting many seedlings in limited space.

Standard

Choose for everyday seed starting across a wide range of vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Jumbo

Choose when seedlings need more root space before transplanting.

Giga

Choose for up-potting vigorous plants that need additional growing time indoors.

A smaller cell increases capacity. A larger cell increases root volume.

The right choice depends on the crop, the number of plants you are starting, and how long they will stay in the tray.
