As part of our Mother’s Day celebrations with the Vego Garden community, we asked for gardening advice your moms shared with you over the years. We are blown away by the depth and thoughtfulness of the advice you shared. There is nothing like advice from Mom, and your submissions prove that. We are so lucky to share these memories with you all of you, so that you too can find some heartwarming inspiration for your own garden to table adventures.

Jillanne P. :
“What it means to garden with my daughter…My daughter is 6 years old. Every year in May we make a fairy garden together. We love going to our local farm to pick out the most perfect small colorful flowers that we think fairies will love. This is a wonderful magical tradition we have been doing for the last few years. She loves to put on her gardening gloves, use her tools and help design the garden. It introduces her to so many valuable skills that she will use in her lifetime. I want her to appreciate the earth and enjoy the beauty around her. I want her to learn how to take care of young plants and keep them strong. I want her to learn responsibility by watering and caring for her garden. By doing this mother daughter project together I hope that she will become a lifelong gardener."

“To me, motherhood (/parenthood) not only means sharing my passions and values, but sharing new experiences and helping my children find their passions.”

“My four kids and I have gardened for the past 10 years. I have 3 boys, but here I am with my daughter (my youngest) and she absolutely loves being in the garden each day. Here is why gardening with my children is important to me… My kids and I spend time in the garden every morning and evening. It’s a time we get to be together to connect and be free from the rest of the world. We have made so many memories together from watering the plants, chasing butterflies and harvesting beautiful vegetables. I would say that throughout our busy days, spending just a few minutes together in the garden each day is almost always the highlight of our day. We love Vego garden and will continue to enjoy their garden boxes for years to come.”

“My oldest, Oakes, lives in the dirt. Every year, he helps me with gardening and he particularly loves planting the marigolds. Our littlest, Asa, will be big enough this year to join in on the fun! My love for gardening runs deep. I spent my very first days on this earth in my mom's flower shop, bottles staying cold in the flower coolers. Gardening is a hobby we've bonded over and shared a love for since I was small. I've learned everything I know about gardening from her, but my favorite tip from her has been to "Think of loss in the garden as an opportunity to grow something new. Me and my family moved to a new home in the fall, leaving behind our first home and first gardens. Thankfully, we have more room now for our two little boys and many more garden beds! We've been married 7 years this year and my flowers are still my absolute favorite thing about our day.”

“My four daughters have all grown up into beautiful women who love me. They are my greatest gift. The daughters who live nearby, came over to help plant a tree on Mother’s Day, and help me in the garden. It was the most memorable Mother’s Day I’ve ever had!”

Leah R. :
“There are so many things that my mom Loretta shared with me about gardening, I really wouldn’t know where to begin! But one of the most important things she insisted on is to take time on a regular basis to just walk around the yard and see what’s poking up, see what’s changing, and to delight in the wonders of gardening. She taught me that gardening is an experience in cultivating gratitude and mindfulness, not just veggies and flowers.”

Victoria:
“Mom always tells me to poke a pencil in the soil of my potted plants to see if they need to be watered. She knows how to rescue any plant!”
